THE BISHOP'S SCHOOL

POONA (NOW PUNE)

INDIA

The school was founded at the instigation of Rev. Fenton of Poona with the blessing of the Bishop of Bombay, to cater for the children of regimental families who had no means of obtaining an education. It commenced in barracks under Cpl. Mansfield in 1864 with 15 boys, mainly children of N.C.O's, and moved to its present site in 1868. (The present School roll is approximately 2000.)

Since its inception there have been fourteen Headmasters (Principals). Some spent a few short years at Bishop's others like Mr. S. Brierly and Mr. H Macnee spent a considerable portion of their lives at Bishops. From all accounts both were excellent Headmasters. In the 20th. centure just three men, all outstanding Principals governed the fortunes of the school between them for a period of eighty years. Rev. Cooper and Mrs. Cooper from 1919 to 1946, Mr. A. E. Lunn from 1947 to 1972 and Mr. B. Roberts from 1973 to 1999. 1 was privileged to serve under two of them from 1945 to 1967 and visited The School several times when Mr. Roberts was Principal.

A new Principal guides The School into the 21 st. century and I am sure he will take his place with the great men who have governed the fortunes of one of the best schools in India so well.

I would be pleased to hear from ANY Bishop's boy or member of Staff, past or present, and look forward to renewing my connections with the School that means so much to me.

As the School Song says:

"When life's work is done, and the Past echoes by,

And we ponder on days left behind,

We shall look back with pride on the School that we love,

The Alma Mater that our memories enshrine.

And so 1 dedicate this page to the wonderful "Bishop's Famfly . "

"Play up Bishop's never let our colours fall"
